CBioClima (Center for Biodiversity Dynamics and Climate Change Research), based at the Institute of Biosciences at Unesp in Rio Claro/SP, received, on Tuesday (26), Dr. Demétrius Lira Martins for a lecture on “Carbon Projects in Brazil: Nature-Based Solutions to Combat Climate Change”. The activity is part of the Charles Darwin Seminars lecture series.

According to Demétrius's presentation, "the carbon market is a trading system in which companies and countries can buy and sell carbon credits to offset their greenhouse gas emissions. It functions as an economic mechanism to incentivize emissions reductions and promote sustainable projects focused on removals."

According to Demétrius, work in this sector faces the challenge of “developing carbon projects with advanced technology and predictive analytics, optimizing the entire life cycle and generating high-integrity carbon credits.”

“Nature-Based Solutions projects are actions to protect, manage, or restore natural ecosystems, bringing benefits to biodiversity and human well-being. These projects are financed by funds generated from the carbon credits they produce, which are sold on the voluntary market. Communities and stakeholders are compensated with the benefits of these projects, which improve their quality of life,” explained Demétrius.

The full presentation will soon be published on the CBioClima YouTube channel.
