Between July 28 and August 1, 2025, the PHENO2025 – “Towards a Global Phenology Science” conference was held in São Pedro, São Paulo, Brazil.
The event brought together researchers, students, and others from various countries to discuss phenology — that is, the study of periodic events in the life cycles of plants and animals (such as flowering, leaf fall, or migration) in relation to climatic and environmental conditions.
CBioClima, based at UNESP in Rio Claro, supported the event and actively participated in its organization.
Main topics discussed during the conference included phenological monitoring networks in the Global North and South, data standardization methods, climate change awareness, the use of remote sensing, integration between traditional knowledge and science, and a special focus on tropical ecosystems.
PHENO2025 served as an important forum connecting geographic regions, scientific disciplines, and science with society, reinforcing the role of phenology as a key tool to understand and respond to the challenges of climate change.

Opening ceremony with authorities kicks off PHENO2025
🍃The Phenology 2025 Conference "PHENO2025 - Towards a Global Phenology Science" began on Monday morning (28) in São Pedro, São Paulo. The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of several authorities. Professor Cesar Martins, vice-rector of São Paulo State University "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (Unesp), currently serving as acting rector, declared the conference open.
Professor Patricia Morellato begins PHENO2025 presentations
🍃The opening ceremony was followed by an opening session with Professor Dr. Patricia Morellato (Unesp, Brazil) nominated Towards a Global Phenology Science. According to the professor, “although the number of phenology related studies in the tropics has increased in the last 20 years, research across the Neotropics is still limited compared to the Northern Hemisphere—especially for certain ecological topics. Since the Neotropics is the most species rich region on Earth, there are still many unanswered questions. It’s important to identify data and knowledge gaps and find ways to address them in future studies.”
Students and former students pay tribute to professor Patricia Morellato
🍃The professor was honored with a video reviewing her career and personal life. It was presented to her by her current and former students, who commended her for her meticulous work on phenology and for being an inspiration to them.
